About M.C. Carolyn

The artwork of M.C.CAROLYN includes a wide range of visual statements about the human condition. She began as the youngest person to be allowed into the nude model drawing classes at the San Francisco Museum of Art. Human forms took life in stone as she taught herself to carve. The continued correspondence between MCC and Isamu Noguchi supported her desire to create stone environments that pulled the viewer around and across her sculpture. Isamu Noguchi answered her question regarding her frustration about the smaller sizes of her sculpture. He told her, …”there is no difference”. As sales, Grants, teaching and Public Art Commissions increased, her sculpture world bloomed

Biography / CV of M.C. Carolyn

Born and raised in San Francisco, California, M.C.CAROLYN grew up living within the City’s great museums. Besides taking many of The Legion of Honor art classes, she spent many hours absorbing artworks and their forms at the nearby De Young Museum. Later, the collections and exhibitions of the group of National Museums of Washington, D.C. and trips to New York filled her mind with an even wider range of successful forms. This led M.C.CAROLYN to explore ancient pre-bronze age sites in Europe and Britain. Her search for artistic statements created from stone pushed her onward into functional Public Art Commissions and Grants. M.C.CAROLYN became Team Leader for many National Competitions with Benedikt Wasmuth and Klaus Klein. She proposed the first Peace Park/Sculpture Garden in the United States and it was accepted by her city of Takoma Park, Maryland.

Artist Statement of M.C. Carolyn

Dreams become reality for M.C.CAROLYN as she discovers shapes, colors, textures in everything around her. She taught herself to carve stone using a direct technique that does not use drawings or maquettes. First comes an idea about the human condition and then the choice of a stone where that idea can become her dream. Textures and tool marks are added to her sculpture palette. She had an ongoing correspondence dialogue with Isamu Noguchi about his use of space within his work. MCC learned to see that when he said, “… there is no difference”, that the eye travels around and through her sculptural work just as the viewer can walk amongst Noguchi’s stone works.
Research of many pre-bronze age world stone sites have shown her the wide brilliance of early humankind’s use of local stone. These insights are reflected in many of MCC Public Art Commissions. M.C.CAROLYN has also been Teamleader for National Competitions.
